How to Best Support your Skin this Summer (Part 1)

Get acquainted with James’ top at-home and in-clinic tips, to ensure your skin is flirty, protected and thriving this sunny season.

If you’re anywhere near where we are, it’s starting to get bloody hot. Each new season denotes a quarter of the year, and the perfect frequency to stop, think and evaluate how happy you are with your skin, your products and your wardrobe (scratch that last one).

The shift from cool to warm is the ideal opportunity to make some small tweaks to your at-home routine, to better support your skin throughout the heat, the sweat and the infinite sunscreen reapplications that summer yields.

If you don’t have the opportunity to come into The Porehouse, below are 5 skincare ingredients that should be on your radar as the degrees climb and the sun begins to seduce you into spending more time outdoors…

1. SPF

Unsurprising, no? We’ll never tire of telling you how important sunscreen application and reapplication is. Whilst SPF wearing is important each season, no matter the weather report, it’s especially important to be diligent with your sunscreen wearing throughout the summer months.

UV radiation is typically higher throughout spring & summer, which increases our chance of developing skin cancers, premature ageing and pigmentation, PLUS we spend more time outdoors, at the beach etc. Applying in the morning & reapplying every two hours (more frequently if you’re submerging your body in water) will help reduce your chances of absorbing dangerous and damaging UV rays.

2. Hyaluronic Acid

Not only does the pesky sun cause a bunch of mayhem as mentioned above, but it also zaps our natural supply of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic Acid, also commonly referred to as HA, is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found throughout the body, is the main component of what gives your skin structure and is responsible for that plump and hydrated look.

By increasing the moisture content in your skin, HA can have various skin benefits, including reducing the appearance of wrinkles and improving wound healing. Due to the sun zapping our natural supply of this wonderful hydrating powerhouse, summer is a fantastic time to supplement your levels by applying a topical HA product.

A favourite of ours is the Viviology Niacinamide + HA Serum. We love this serum for many reasons, one being its use of three different weighted HAs, which likens its effects on the skin to a big drink of water, and because it’s really nice to look at.

3. Polyhydroxy Acid (PA)

The younger, cooler and gentler cousin of the AHA & BHA family, Polyhydroxy Acids are a chemical exfoliant that also help retain moisture in the skin. Additionally, PHAs reduce post-exfoliation photosensitivity which make them the ideal alternative to more invasive chemical exfoliants in the summer months, when you’ll be exposed to the sun more often.

You can find PHAs in the Viviology Liquid Exfoliant! Rejoice!

4. Vitamin B3 AKA Niacinamide

A product rich in niacinamide will help to brighten, balance oil, minimise redness and provide antioxidant protection and hydration to the skin. Subbing in a Niacinamide-rich serum in the summer months is a great lightweight alternative to a rich moisturiser, and we are big fans of Aspect’s Multi-B Plus Serum.

5. Accessorise and shade!

Whilst not a cosmeceutical ingredient, wearing a hat, sunglasses, protective clothing and seeking shade where possible are all important tools to care best for your skin when you’re outside.

Consider all these other factors as important parts of your proper sun safety toolkit and a fabulous opportunity to let each outfit truly sing with a kick-ass pair of sunnies and hat. Not to mention hats are fabulous for bad hair days and when you don’t want to be recognised at the post office.
